HSI Faculty Learning Community | Spring 2024

The Office for Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives invites faculty to participate in the HSI Faculty Learning Community (FLC) during the 2024 spring semester. This cohort-based experience is part of UCF’s POTENCIAL initiative which is funded by a U.S. Department of Education Title V grant. Project POTENCIAL focuses on increasing 2- and 4-year graduation rates, promoting high impact practices, and increasing the sense of belonging among Latine students, thus the sense of belonging of all students.

Over the course of four mixed-mode sessions, faculty will explore a variety of pedagogical approaches, including Dr. Gina Garcia’s servingness framework as well as the practical applications of universal design for learning. Participants will engage in conversations about how to utilize the frameworks across disciplines and will enhance their abilities to create community in a classroom of any size or modality.

The HSI FLC features three key learning outcomes:

  1. Application of frameworks to enhance teaching and learning;
  2. Anatomization of cultural details that impact student experience, resulting in enhanced cultural competence for faculty and students; and
  3. Adaptation as FLC members recognize how overlapping experiences of communities within our student body create a different lived experience for each student.

HSI FLC participants will engage with readings, podcasts, activities, and group discussions to enhance their learning. Faculty members from all disciplines and backgrounds, both in undergraduate and graduate level education, are invited to join this FLC.

All sessions will run from 12:00-2:00pm on the following dates:

  • February 1 (UCF Main Campus, lunch provided)
  • February 29 (virtual)
  • March 28 (virtual)
  • April 18 (UCF Main Campus, lunch provided).

HSI FLC participants will be required to present their experiences and what they learned through the FLC at the 2024 Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning’s Summer Faculty Development Institute HSI track. This Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) presentation may include a panel discussion or group presentation, the scope of which will be determined by the size of the FLC.

Full participation in both the 2024 HSI Faculty Learning Community and HSI Track of the Summer Faculty Development Institute (SFDI) are required in order to receive compensation in the amount of $1,500. No partial compensation will be awarded. Payments will be made after the close of the SFDI in May 2024. Participants will also receive copies of some of the texts utilized in the FLC experience.
